Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County

Become a Tutor

“This was one of the most tightly crafted and well organized workshops I’ve attended. Lessons, activities, and modeling were well spaced. No one was ever bored. Thank you so much.”

“Our trainers were all very informative, helpful and caring. The course was well put together. I thoroughly enjoyed them and looked forward to them. Thank you.”

“Absolute admiration for the trainers – their energy and dedication to adult literacy. Thank you!”

“I’ve enjoyed every minute! Thank you for your enthusiasm and knowledge.”

“Great trainers! The materials and lessons were very well organized and presented.”

The above quotes were taken directly from some of the evaluation forms handed in by our new tutors who completed our Spring 2007 Tutor Training program.

We typically conduct the Tutor Training in the Spring and the Fall each year.

The next Tutor Training is scheduled for Wednesday evenings at the Sparta United Methodist Church from Sept. 10th through Oct. 22nd, 2008 starting at 6:30 PM and ending approximately 9:30 PM.  The 1st week is actually the Orientation (see below) which typically ends around 8:30 PM.

If you decide to join us, you will be trained to help adults in two areas of need:

*  Basic Literacy -- reading, writing, job-related and life skills; and
*  Learning English -- conversational English for speakers of other languages

No previous experience is necessary to be trained to tutor in either area; and you don't have to speak another language.

The training requires attendance at an Orientation session followed by 18 hours of classes (6 weeks of 3 hours per night).   The Orientation also acts as a general information session on the details of training and the responsibilities of tutoring.  We encourage you to come to the Orientation session so you will be able to decide if you want to be involved in this type of volunteer work.  Attendance at the Orientation will not obligate you to participate in the subsequent training.

Please note that while we are a Sussex County organization, we also serve parts of Warren County since there is no Literacy Volunteers affiliate there.  We currently have tutors and students from different parts of Warren County.

If you would like to be put on our mailing list to be notified about a month prior to the next training session, please click here

Thank you for your interest in this much-needed and very satisfying volunteer work!
