If you decide to join us, you will be trained to help adults in two areas of need:
* Basic Literacy -- reading, writing, job-related and life skills; and
* Learning English -- conversational English for speakers of other languages
No previous experience is necessary to be trained to tutor in either area; and you don't have to speak another language.
The
training requires attendance at an Orientation session followed by 18
hours of classes (6 weeks of 3 hours per night). The Orientation also
acts as a general information session on the details of training and
the responsibilities of tutoring. We encourage you to come to the
Orientation session so you will be able to decide if you want to be
involved in this type of volunteer work. Attendance at the
Orientation will not obligate you to participate in the subsequent
training.
Please note that while we are a Sussex County organization, we also
serve parts of Warren County since there is no Literacy Volunteers
affiliate there. We currently have tutors and students from different
parts of Warren County.
If you would like to be put on our mailing list to be notified about a month prior to the next training session, please click here.
Thank you for your interest in this much-needed and very satisfying volunteer work!
